I always think of Autumn as the start of a new year…the weather is changing and it’s time for a hair update after enjoying long, lustrous and let’s face it slightly knotty Summer locks. The fringe (or bangs if you’re from the US) is the quickest way to update you hair without doing anything too drastic. Recently Millie Manderson (nee Mackintosh) cut herself a fringe citing Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung as her influences and I absolutely love it- it’s reminiscent of 1960s French songbirds Francoise Hardy and France Gall!
And yesterday morning CHANEL sent their models (Miranda Kerr included) down the runway with gorgeous bobs with a sharp angular fringes cut into them- they looked tres chic. Similarly, supermodel Rosie Huntington Whitely appeared on the cover of the October issue of Elle rocking a seriously gorgeous platinum blonde wig with a cheek bone enhancing fringe.
My fringe idols have always been Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin, but as I have a threehead (opposed to the usual forehead) I can’t get away with a fringe, which is why I’ve been road testing a side parting with plans to cut it into a long, sweeping side fringe. I’ve had a centre parting for over four years now and it’s high time for a change. Kim Kardashian is currently rocking the most awesome side fringe along with her newly bleached locks at Paris Fashion Week, and I think it makes her look chicer than ever.
Fringes/bangs are notoriously difficult to maintain and when I asked Millie her top tips for keeping hers in tip top condition she said that “I haven’t got the hang of it yet to be honest.. Carry a comb at all times and use a styling creme”. It isn’t for the faint hearted or the non committal, I’m going to start off with a very very low maintenance side fringe and see how I go!
