Insta Hype

I have a confession, I’m inspired by social media. I wish I could say that I spend hours poring over Vogue, or attempt to channel Talitha Getty, however social media (and the starlets with the largest followings) inspire me and my wardrobe more than any magazine could.

Where once Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller and Kate Moss reigned supreme as style icons now we have Emily Ratjakowski, Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid and a plethora of super glossy “digital influencers” who all rock some amazing “real” looks. When deciding what to wear I often get inspired by fashion accounts that chronicle the best insta looks, I then adapt that look to work for me and add my own twist.

Last week I noticed that the Adidas Superstars were simply everywhere I looked – on instagram, Tumblr and on the feet of some of the glossiest girls on social media (Hey Claire, Kendall etc) – I thought to myself that I’d pick up a pair as I’d just had payment for a project and hadn’t bought anything for myself in quite a while.

I called the Adidas store on Oxford Circus – zero stock. I spent a good hour calling all of the JD Sports, Foot Lockers and Office within a ten mile radius until I finally found the last pair in a UK 6 at a Foot Locker on Oxford Street. It was nowhere near where my meeting was and yet I marched over (navigating the teaming street full of half termers) until I finally feverishly picked up my new kicks. Had you told me a year ago that I’d go to so much trouble for a pair of trainers I would have narrowed my eyes and laughed – no way – only a pair of Isabel Marant boots would get me so motivated. Times have changed though, and insta hype is very real. I’d far rather have an item of clothing that someone is actually wearing to brunch/the movies than what is in a glossy editorial feature in a monthly magazine. Girls like Emily Ratjakowski, Sincerley Jules and Kendall have become style icons in their own right and their style is more accessible than ever (especially with RewardStyle’s LiketoKnowit feature).

Needless to say, I’m in love with my Superstars. They dress down outfits, are super comfy and make me feel part of the hype. The broader worries with this trend (consumerism, generation NOW) are for another time and place, for now I’m going to enjoy being part of the insta-bubble.
